Wisconsin Emergency Medical Services for Children

Dr. Michael Kim

Dr. Michael Kim is an academic pediatric emergency physician primarily focused on improving care for children in emergency department and prehospital settings. He serves as the co-chair of the Wisconsin Emergency Medical Services for Children (WI EMSC), the pediatric medical director for the ALS Consortium of Dane County EMS, and the UW Department of Emergency Section of EMS.

Dr. Kim was initially exposed to the EMS setting as the co-investigator for a prehospital pediatric pain management grant. Through two cycles of the MCHB/EMSC targeted issues grant from 2004 to 2010, he helped develop a pain management module and disseminated it to three other EMS agencies across the country, resulting in several scholarly publications.

Since becoming the chair of WI EMSC in 2008, Dr. Kim has significantly impacted emergency care for children in Wisconsin. His notable projects include funding and distributing pediatric bags to all Wisconsin EMS agencies, providing pediatric emergency care conferences, creating and distributing comfort bags, participating in the EIIC Pediatric Readiness Quality Collaborative, and initiating a CQI program for weight estimates in children. Under his leadership, WI EMSC has secured several grants, such as the Advancing Healthier Wisconsin Grant for the pediatric readiness initiative, the EIIC Telehealth Grant, the EIIC State Partnership Rural Expansion Program, and the EIIC PECCC grant. These achievements have contributed to the organization's meaningful impact across the state.

In 2016, Dr. Kim was appointed as the pediatric medical director for the ALS Consortium of seven EMS agencies in Dane County. In this role, he has revamped the pediatric conference and education format, established a pediatric case review process, advanced airway management protocol, and implemented a QI program to improve weight estimation and medication dosing for pediatric patients.
